Kaloud Samsaris Vitria III

The Kaloud Samsaris Vitria III is a borosilicate glass and food grade silicone hookah bowl, cut to seat the Lotus III. It is the third generation of the first glass hybrid bowl anyone built, and it is patent pending in the US and internationally.

Two materials, two jobs. Borosilicate glass forms the chamber, because glass is chemically inert and absorbs nothing. Food grade silicone forms the lip, because that is what the Lotus grips. The device seats instead of balancing and stays put when you turn the lid.

Why glass

Clay absorbs. Every clay bowl eventually carries a ghost of everything smoked in it and no amount of scrubbing brings it back. Glass takes on nothing. A mint bowl on Friday and a dessert bowl on Saturday taste like what they are.

Borosilicate rather than ordinary glass, because it has a low coefficient of thermal expansion. It tolerates a hot device above and room temperature air below without stressing.

Glass also lets you see. You can watch the pack, see how the juices are running, and tell the bowl is drying out before the flavour tells you.

Cut for the Lotus III

Most bowls are a compromise with whatever HMD you own. This one is dimensioned around the device. No gap for heat to escape, no shimming, no silicone sleeve. Pack it, seat the Lotus, add coals.

Packing it

Fluff pack rather than dense. Break the shisha apart with your fingers and drop it in loosely until it sits just under the lip, then level it without pressing down. Leave a few millimetres between tobacco and top, because shisha expands as it heats and tobacco touching the device scorches quickly.

Care

Cool it fully, then wash in warm water. Glass gives up residue immediately, which is the point of it. Never run cold water into a hot bowl.

Glass, ceramic, or high heat

• Vitria glass. Absorbs nothing and you can see the pack. The default.
• Lapis ceramic. More thermal mass, steadier through very long sessions.
• Samsaris High Heat. Deliberately runs hot. Dense cut and dark leaf only.
